The return of legislated online poker in Russia could help efforts to fund the Russian National Chess team. Russian mogul Vasily Anisimov hopes that this proposed legislation will help fund several entities which have gone under-funded for quite some time. Among these is the Chess Federation. Sources indicate that they could gather upwards to 12 million Swiss Francs from legislated online poker.
Early in the summer, president Vladimir Putin asked that a study be launched to study how state-run lotteries, including sports betting, could further be monetized. This is all in the hopes that they could gather money which would help increase budgets for National sports entities.
Russia has made a good name for itself in the world of professional poker. There are a lot of Russian players which rank amongst the game’s best. Just this past March, Russia reached the finals of the GPI World Cup, where the best players from the Top 8 poker nations battled it out in a long tournament for the World Title. Although Russia lost in the end, rising star Anatoly Filatov and Russian poker superstar Vladimir Troyanovskiy further prove that Russia is a big name in the world of poker.
Russia ranks 14 of the Top 300 players in the world. Apart from Filatov and Trovanovskiy, top Russian players include Igor Kurganov, Alex Bilokur and Andrey Zaichenko. All of these professionals could go a long way in helping other sports entities in the country. Only time will tell if this will pan out.
